The Mandalorian: Grogu's Identity, Backstory, and Future Explained

Introduced as Baby Yoda, Grogu is the emotional heart of The Mandalorian. Here's everything Star Wars has revealed about Grogu to date.

15 Grogu Puts The Rancor To Sleep

The Book of Boba Fett Episode 7 "Chapter 7: In the Name of Honor"

Grogu's Force feats will always be some of his best moments, beginning with this one in The Book of Boba Fett. When the rancor gets loose and unleashes itself upon Mos Espa, Din Djarin is the one who attempts to tame it, but he fails and soon finds himself vulnerable to attack. It's then that Grogu steps up to protect his father and the people of the city, contrasting his tiny size with the rancor's to prove that even the smallest can certainly be the mightiest.

✕ Remove Ads

What's most breathtaking about this moment is seeing how Grogu has learned from Luke Skywalker, even after he's chosen the Mandalorian path instead. The way he uses the Force is rooted in peace rather than fear, something he has yet to display up until this point. Grogu doesn't have to hurt the rancor to help it, and he even seeks rest with the creature once he's calmed it down. The little one certainly has many more impressive Force feats than this, but the display of change Grogu has gone through still earns it a place on this list.

14 Grogu Wins His Training Fight With Ragnar Vizsla

The Mandalorian Season 3, Episode 4 "Chapter 20: The Foundling"

✕ Remove Ads

It's somewhat of a shocking moment when Din Djarin decides that Grogu is ready to train with the other Mandalorian foundlings, considering how young the little one still is. Grogu, however, has proven himself before, and Din knows this better than anyone else. The trust that Din places in Grogu pays off, as Grogu shows everyone - including the audience - that he's more than capable of holding his own against the other foundlings.

The best part of this moment is Grogu learning how to blend his Jedi training with the Mandalorian way at the encouragement of his father. It's only when he commits to this that he's able to win the fight, using the Force as his ally all the way through. It's a wonderful glimpse at what's to come in Grogu's future as a Mandalorian warrior, though other moments have proven to be more memorable over the years.

The Mandalorian is set after the Empire's fall and before the First Order's emergence in the ever-growing Star Wars universe. The series follows the travails of a lone gunfighter named Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic. Acting as the first live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian has become incredibly popular on Disney+, partly due to Mando’s relationship with Grogu, which the internet dubbed “Baby Yoda” upon his introduction in season 1.

13 Grogu Completes Luke Skywalker's Training Course

The Book of Boba Fett Episode 6 "Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger"

It's impossible to compile Grogu's best Star Wars moments and not include something from his time spent under Luke Skywalker's tutelage on the planet Ossus. Though only a brief glimpse at Grogu's training is offered, it shows quite plainly just how much Din Djarin has affected Grogu's life. No longer does he have a passion to learn the ways of the Jedi; all Grogu wants is to be back with his father. Despite this, Grogu still learns under Luke's watchful eye, and the best moment arrives when he shows off these skills.

He's completed the course, but he doesn't feel fulfilled - which leads to him returning to Din Djarin.

Using the same training remote Luke did in A New Hope, Grogu navigates his way through a tricky course until he can take down the remote without a weapon. Grogu's given the chance to show off his new, powerful flips and his razor-sharp reaction time, all of which reveals just how attuned to the Force Grogu has let himself become. By the end of it, however, Grogu's true priorities are made quite clear. He's completed the course, but he doesn't feel fulfilled - which leads to him returning to Din Djarin. This sequence is significant for that very reason.

12 Grogu Escapes Mandalore To Save His Father

The Mandalorian Season 3, Episode 2 "Chapter 18: The Mines of Mandalore"

✕ Remove Ads

Grogu is at his very best when he's protecting the person he loves most, which is certainly the case on Mandalore early on in The Mandalorian season 3. Rather than being afraid, Grogu is quick to follow Din Djarin's captor into the mines of Mandalore, and he even attempts a rescue on his own with the Force. When this attempt goes awry, however, Grogu is obedient to Din's order to get to their N-1 starfighter and find Bo-Katan - and he's able to navigate his own way there with ease.

Even when he's faced with an Alamite creature on the way out, Grogu doesn't falter. He's able to use the Force to push the creature back before making his way to Kalevala in short order. This is massively impressive for someone of Grogu's young age. Not only that, but it also shows how much Grogu cares about his father. His urgency proves that he's eager to return with help, thus putting on display the deeply caring nature of their relationship. There are, however, even more impressive situations where Grogu has saved his father before.

11 Grogu Helps Din Djarin Defeat Moff Gideon's Praetorian Guards

The Mandalorian Season 3, Episode 8 "Chapter 24: The Return"

One of the best parts of The Mandalorian season 3 finale is seeing how Din Djarin and Grogu have learned to team up almost as equals rather than as father and son. While Din is constantly eager to protect Grogu as any good father would be, he still recognizes Grogu's own potential, and that is quite plainly displayed in this fight scene against the Praetorian Guards. It's Din rushing to Grogu's aid, but Grogu helps to protect his father just as much as his father protects him.

Throughout the fight, Din is initiating all the action, but Grogu is there to reinforce the defensive. He uses the Force to disarm and block, but not to attack, which is yet another lesson learned from his time with Luke. They quickly get into a rhythm that helps them defeat the elite guards, and when it's all over, it's touching to see how proud Din is of his son. This moment is significant for how it sets Grogu up to become Din's Mandalorian apprentice, even if Grogu's had even better moments of action.

Din Djarin

Din Djarin was once a lone bounty who has since tasked himself with raising his adopted son and Mandalorian apprentice, Grogu. Born on Aq Vetina and raised on Concordia by the Mandalorian faction the Children of the Watch, Din is an orphan and Mandalorian foundling who has risked both his life and his Mandalorian Creed to protect Grogu. Djarin has become an important part of the galaxy's fight against the Imperial Remnant that lingers in the wake of the Empire's fall, as he is now working under-the-table for the fledgling New Republic's rangers.

The Mandalorian Season 3 Ending Explained

The Mandalorian season 3 has come to an end with an action-packed finale, complete with more than a few surprise twists and teases for the future.

10 Grogu Does The "Magic Hand Thing"

The Mandalorian Season 1, Episode 8 "Chapter 8: Redemption"

In a shift away from moments that have heavy importance, Grogu is mostly known for how easily he can make the audience laugh, especially due to his playfulness as a young child. One of the very best examples of this arrives at the culmination of The Mandalorian season 1, when only Moff Gideon and his TIE fighter stand between Din Djarin's crew and their freedom. The stakes are at their highest, and in a position of high exposure, the group knows they need a quick way out.

✕ Remove Ads

Still hung up on Grogu's heroics with the Force, Greef Karga suggests that Grogu does "the magic hand thing" again. He mimics a three-fingered hand for Grogu, which only earns him an adorable smile and a wave in return. This moment highlights Grogu's pure innocence, using it to resolve some of the tension that's mounted over the course of this high-stakes finale. Though Grogu certainly has much funnier moments, this is one that's stuck with audiences even years later.

9 Grogu Tests His IG-12 Mech Suit For The First Time

The Mandalorian Season 3, Episode 7 "Chapter 23: The Spies"

One of the biggest surprises in The Mandalorian season 3 is the return of IG-11, whose parts are refurbished into an IG-12 mech suit for Grogu to steer. The suit is commissioned by Greef Karga for Grogu specifically, and from the moment the Anzellan first delivers it to Greef's office, chaos ensues. With the suit containing buttons that can say "yes" or "no," it's the first time Din Djarin gets to have direct communication with his son - for better or for worse.

✕ Remove Ads

Grogu eventually masters the steering, but he won't lift his finger from the "yes" button, creating a hilariously realistic moment of Din having to hear his child press the button over and over again. Even then, Grogu's antics don't stop, as the excited child begins to use the suit's bigger size to his advantage. He grabs snacks that he hasn't paid for and even gets an arm up on his father. This sequence is a much-needed bright light in an otherwise heavy finish to the season, and certainly one of Grogu's most hilarious moments to date.

8 Grogu Eats (& Throws Up) His Blue Cookies

The Mandalorian Season 2, Episode 4 "Chapter 12: The Siege"

✕ Remove Ads

Though it has little narrative weight in the course of the entire story, Grogu with his blue cookies in The Mandalorian season 2 is inarguably iconic. These blue cookies have since come to define this era of Grogu's story, and pieces of merchandise containing both Grogu and blue cookies can often be found because of this hilarious sequence. The best part of it is seeing how much Grogu loves the chaos of his father's day-to-day life, and how, like any child in the real world, he still insists on having his snacks in the meantime.

Grogu acquires the cookies by stealing them with the Force from a classmate at Nevarro's school, but even more hilarious is the fact that he slams them back while Din Djarin is in the middle of a dogfight against TIE fighters. Completely unbothered by all the action, Grogu acts like a child at Disney World, eating his cookies and throwing his arms in the air as if he's on a roller coaster. It's the realistic aspect of this scene that makes it so hilarious, certainly adding to Grogu's charm as a character - and making it one of his best moments.

7 Grogu Reunites With Din Djarin On Tatooine

The Book of Boba Fett Episode 7 "Chapter 7: In the Name of Honor"

Grogu is a package deal with Din Djarin, making their goodbye in The Mandalorian season 2 finale one of Star Wars' most emotional scenes ever. This also makes their reunion all the sweeter, especially with the series having shown just how different Din and Grogu had become while on their own. Grogu surprises Din on Tatooine in the midst of his fight against the Pykes, making for a reunion that's just as wonderfully chaotic as this duo has always been.

The only thing that takes away from this utterly sweet moment is the fact it happens in a show that isn't The Mandalorian. Some viewers also believe that this reunion happened too soon, and that it should have happened in The Mandalorian season 3 instead. Nonetheless, it's still a beautiful moment, especially with the warmth both Grogu and Din share with one another. Only a few other moments are better than this one, and most of them also revolve around his dedication to his father.

6 Grogu Holds Back The Fire On Mandalore

The Mandalorian Season 3, Episode 8 "Chapter 24: The Return"

There's no doubt that one of Grogu's most impressive Force feats takes place on Mandalore, becoming an even stronger version of what he first did in The Mandalorian season 1 finale. It was on Nevarro that he held back flames like this for the first time, but on Mandalore, it's taken up a notch. Din Djarin, Bo-Katan Kryze, and Grogu are all left with no escape when the exploding light cruiser crashes into Moff Gideon's secret base, leaving them vulnerable to the flames - until Grogu steps up to take care of it.

Grogu essentially creates an entire Force field around himself, Din, and Bo-Katan, shielding all three of them from the flames until the explosion has died down. This is a huge step-up from what he first did in the cantina on Nevarro, and it proves how much he's grown since then. It's easily one of Grogu's most heroic acts, with only a few others beating it out.

How Old Grogu Is In The Mandalorian (Each Season)

Grogu ages differently than other species in The Mandalorian, and Jon Favreau has hinted at how old he may be in each season of the TV show.

5 Grogu Force-Heals Greef Karga On Nevarro

The Mandalorian Season 1, Episode 7 "Chapter 7: The Reckoning"

Grogu's best Force feat is easily his ability to Force heal, which he does for the first time on Greef Karga. Though he attempts to do this for Din Djarin early on in The Mandalorian, he doesn't get the chance to until this particular moment. After being attacked by creatures in the night on Nevarro, Greef is left with a poisoned wound that's quickly becoming lethal. With no more medpacs left to heal him, Greef is left to the mercy of Grogu, who he believes is actually trying to eat him.

Grogu does this for Greef even when they have no established relationship, and when the trust between parties is at its most fragile.

✕ Remove Ads

Grogu, however, does nothing of the sort, and he instead completes Star Wars' first ever Force healing in live-action. It only takes mere seconds for Grogu to call upon the Force to heal Greef's wound, saving the magistrate's life and transforming his heart. Grogu does this for Greef even when they have no established relationship, and when the trust between parties is at its most fragile - proving how beautifully honest his heart is. It's an absolutely incredible moment, one that's only been outdone by a few others.

4 Grogu Sips His Soup On Sorgan

The Mandalorian Season 1, Episode 4 "Chapter 4: Sanctuary"

✕ Remove Ads

What catapulted Grogu into worldwide fame was his ability to be extremely memeable, and this scene is one of the main two that established his place as such a legendary meme. Like any child would, Grogu goes against Din Djarin's order to stay put and instead wanders with his soup away from their table. Din is caught in an intense fight against Cara Dune at the time, leaving him distracted until the two warriors reach a stalemate. It's only then that they turn their heads at the sound of Grogu sipping his soup.

The image of Grogu sipping his soup is almost inescapable to this day, many years after the episode first premiered. While the scene in and of itself is rather insignificant to the overall narrative and simply serves the purpose of providing audiences with a laugh, it has since become one of The Mandalorian's - and Grogu's - most recognizable moments. This is a testament to how little Grogu has to do to be so beloved, with only one more hilarious moment beating this one out.

3 Grogu Pushes Buttons On The Razor Crest

The Mandalorian Season 1, Episode 4 "Chapter 4: Sanctuary"

✕ Remove Ads

The first look at Din Djarin and Grogu's new life together arrives in this scene, which takes place just after Din has made his getaway with Grogu from Nevarro. It highlights the sometimes harsh reality of traveling with children, which is them satisfying their own curiosity despite being told no repeatedly. Grogu does this with the buttons on the Razor Crest, pressing new ones even though his guardian has told him to stop touching things.

This is another comedic Grogu scene that's since come to define how he's seen in pop culture. Merchandise branded with the phrase "pushing buttons" is often seen with Grogu, much of which has to do with how this scene was memed at the time. People would play music over the various buttons Grogu pressed, and many different versions of this meme went viral. This moment is perhaps the best example of Grogu being himself, with only two other narratively and emotionally significant moments surpassing this one.

2 Grogu Saves Din Djarin From The Mudhorn

The Mandalorian Season 1, Episode 2 "Chapter 2: The Child"

Though this Force feat is no more incredible than the Force healing or the Force field, it's the first time Grogu ever uses the Force in Star Wars, and the importance this moment has cannot be underscored. At this point, Grogu has known Din Djarin for perhaps a little more than a day or two, but he is quick to step in when Din's life is at risk. Left to the mercy of the mudhorn, Din lifts his vibroblade and accepts his fate, but Grogu instead lifts his hand to keep the mudhorn from charging forward towards the bounty hunter.

✕ Remove Ads

This is the moment in which Grogu fully transforms Din Djarin's heart, cementing the bond that will only grow even stronger between the father and son. If it weren't for Grogu's actions at that moment, The Mandalorian would be a much different show. Now, the mudhorn has since come to define their clan of two, with Din Djarin bearing the mudhorn's signet on his armor as a permanent memory of this very moment. Grogu has just one moment better than this one, which altered the course of their lives forever.

This is the moment in which Grogu fully transforms Din Djarin's heart, cementing the bond that will only grow even stronger between the father and son.

1 Grogu Sees His Father For The First Time

The Mandalorian Season 2, Episode 8 "Chapter 16: The Rescue"

✕ Remove Ads

There's no question that Grogu's best moment, and that of The Mandalorian as a whole, is when he gets to see his father's face for the first time. The goodbye between Din Djarin and Grogu is Star Wars at its most meaningful and emotional, displaying the raw emotions of a father and a son diverging paths without knowing when they will get to see each other again. Grogu's wish to see his father's face at least once before he goes is fulfilled, and the way Din risks his identity for his son fills this moment with even more pure meaning.

Star Wars has yet to top this moment where Grogu is concerned. The impact it had at the time will never be forgotten, no matter how their story has unfolded ever since. It's evidence of the fact that Grogu is truly at his best when he's in tune with his emotions at his father's side, something Star Wars and The Mandalorian will hopefully keep doing so long as they continue to create stories around this adorable little guy.
